* Activity Background: Early Zhao’an people were from Zhao’an County of Zhangzhou Prefecture in Fujian Province, China 300 years ago across the Taiwan Strait. A few years ago, to pass down tradition while preserving culture, their descendants initiated Yunlin Hakka festival. Celebrations are now held in three Zhao’an townships from north to south annually, featuring traditional Zhao’an lifestyle and cultural innovations.
* Our goals: Lunbei, Erlun and Xiluo are the most densely populated places of Hakka Zhao’an in Taiwan. The people there still speak Hakka with a unique accent, and they retain folk customs, martial arts, and traditional food extensively. Unlike the Hakka people in Liudui of Pingtung and Kaohsiung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli, Zhao’an people are truly different. For instance, in early days when they were settling down in Yunlin, to defend their homes against robbers and thieves, they would stay up all night, holding torches in their hands. The practice is called “Gu Geng,” meaning “staying awake after midnight hours.” These days, people no long need to do this. The practice has turned into an interesting tradition for the Mid-moon Festival, “nighttime reception.” The locals love recalling their shared memory of the old practice.
