Brief Introduction

* Organizer: Council for Hakka Affairs, Taichung City Government
* Activity Schedule: May 11 ~ June 16, 2019
* Location: Donshih Old Train Station Hakka Culture Park; Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Temple
* Activity Background: Dongshi’s Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Temple is the oldest temple that worships Lu Ban in Taiwan. It dates back to more than 240 years ago when in the 40th year of Qianlong Hakka settlers started to worship the Sian Shih flag. The founding of the temple is deeply related to the developments of Dongshi. Other than this old temple, there are 33 more temple branches which worship Lu Ban, 24 of which derive from this major one in Dongshi. Taichung City Government invites representatives of all of the temple branches founded by early settlers in Taiwan to gather up on May 26. On the 27th, a grand worship ceremony will be held, celebrating Lu Ban’s 2,524th birthday.

Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-Lung initiated the Taichung Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Culture Festival in 2016. This year, the festival is held again. It is selected by the Hakka Affairs Council as one of the main 12 Hakka festivals in Taiwan, becoming a national event.

Working with 12 agencies, the organizer will launch 18 events to support the 2017 Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Culture Festival, such as the Luban Design Festival & WING Industry, Government and Academia Strategic Seminar by Economic Development Bureau; Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Award Jury Review and Award Ceremony for Improving Employment Rate by Labor Affairs Bureau; Discover Taichung’s Handicrafts Exhibition by Cultural Affairs Bureau; Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Culture Festival – Vocational Schools Fair by Taichung Municipal Dongshih Industrial High School and Education Bureau; and Romantic Hakka Towns: One-Day Tour Bus by Taichung Tourism Bureau; and Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Lu Ban 2,424th Birthday Celebration by Civil Affairs Bureau. These are part of the government’s effort in bringing together religion, culture, industry, tourism and education.

Council for Hakka Affairs is scheduled to invite master wood carvers to make art at Dongshi Old Train Station Hakka Culture Park from May 13 to 26, 2017. The city’s former Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Award winners, Chen Ching-fong and Chen Wen-Hsing, as well as renowned indigenous carver Sakuliu, will be making wood art in front of the public.

On the evening of May 25, at Ciao Sheng Sian Shih Temple Square, Wu Chou Yaun Palm Puppet Troupe hosted by award-winning Huang Wen-Lang staged the debut of “Legend of Lu Ban” to help visitors learn about related history.

On 13:00, May 26, at Sanmin Street and a few other streets in Dongshi, an open-air parade will be held, gathering temple parade teams that worship Lu Ban. A team of cars will carry giant tool models invited by Lu Ban to join force.

On the mornings of the 27th and 28th, at Dongshi Old Train Station Hakka Culture Park, Hakka cultural and arts performances and a famers’ market will be held. An evening party will also take place on the 27th; unlike regular evening events which invite pop stars to draw crowds, outstanding Hakka choirs and musical bands will be there to dedicate a few songs. This is organized to shed light on Hakka culture and give Hakka artists a chance to advertise their works.
