Taichung to hold Xin Ding Ban Festival

The 2018 Xin Ding Ban Festival of Taichung, held by Dongshi District Office, Taichung City, will take place amid much fanfare from March 2 (Fri.) to 4 (Sun.), 2018 in Dongshi, a mountain town of Taichung. Internationally renowned designer Cheng Yung-chi created a visual theme which emphasizes “Xin Ding Ban” for the festival. The theme is accompanied by special illustrations which highlight Dongshi’s nature and culture. Calligraphic writings by young talents bring all modern and traditional elements together, making the festival site lively, joyful, and welcoming. To further create a festive atmosphere, in Dongshi Old Train Station and Hakka Culture Park and Wenhua Street, there are art installations which introduce Dongshi’s local features. For sure, these places are adorned with bright red lanterns. It can be said that the festival site is an innovative, gigantic piece of landscape art. From the lunar New Year till the Lantern Day, visitors can expect to have a carnivalesque experience in Dongshi. Finally, a modern, 400-centimeter-tall installation and an impressive wood sculpture “Xin Ding Ban” awaits people at Dongshi Bridge Entrance ( Dongshi side). On February 24 (Sat.) and 28 (Wed.), at Fuxing Temple and Liyu Gong Park of Shicheng, Cuan-Le-Ge Puppet Troupe and Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group will give outdoor performances. From March 1 to 3, at the main stage of Dongshi Old Train Station and Hakka Culture Park, one show will be performed at 7pm. On March 1, Ming Hwa Yuan will dedicate a special Taiwanese opera show “Story of the Dark Warrior”. On the Lantern Day of March 2, Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe will tell the “Story of a Salt Jar.” On March 3, famous Hakka singers Liu Shau-Hi and Ayugo Huang will sing for visitors. Local Hakka music groups such as Abibai Live Band, JanuS Band, Hungyun Women’s Music Association Chorus, Dongshi Farmers’ Association Zhongruan Class, and Sounds of Dajia River Chorus will play traditional Hakka music and sing traditional mountain songs and modern songs to celebrate the event. More fun activities are to take place. For two days in a row on March 2 and 3, at Dongshi Old Train Station and Hakka Culture Park, a 60kg Xin Ding Ban will be on display. A Ding Ban-making contest for teams and a “passing down happiness” event will be held. At temples near Wenhua Street, similar activities will take place, such as Ding Ban-making contests for individuals, as well as rituals for people to ask for a new baby from gods, for good luck at work and school, and for general blessings in life. “Firecracker attacks” as a kind of celebration will kick off, too. All these are especially designed for visitors to explore hospitable Dongshi. The organizer cordially invites people to visit Taichung’s mountain town, Dongshi. The Council for Hakka Affairs values local cultural development and makes sure visitors have an enjoyable Hakka cultural experience during the lantern festival.
